VENICE. Plaster falls off the bell tower in St Marks’s Square: police had to border it off. Some employees in the “Venice Store”, which is just beneath the bell tower, told the local police that some small pieces of stone had fallen from the top. The Fire Brigade immediately came to see, and from an initial control the pieces fell because of some old bricks crumbled, that had been made with poor quality sand.

The fallen pieces were small and smashed into fragments when they hit the ground. The Fire Brigade checked up to ten meters high on the tower, and for safety reasons the local police bordered off the base. Further investigations will be carried out over the next few days.
