VENICE. The first sluice gate has reached Venice for Mose, the gargantuan mobile barrier designed to save the city from the flood waters. The enormous construction has arrived at Venice Lido and at the end of next week the installation will begin of the sluice gate in the “caisson” that has already been built underwater. The photo shows in yellow the sluice gate, and in red the equipment that will be used to install it.

Mose is a series of mobile barriers that will be installed in the transit areas joining the Venetian Lagoon to the Adriatic Sea. When the flood waters arrive the barriers rise up and protect Venice from the repeated phenomenon of flooding. The work on this monumental installation began in 2003 and is forecast to be completed in 2016. There will be a total of four mobile dams, which extend for a total length of 1.6 km. Each sluice gate measures 18.5 meters long and 20 meters wide.
