Cycle to Venice: the project for the new cycle track

The new track will be 4 km long, will cost 3 million Euros and will be ready in 2014

VENICE. Cycle to Venice: at long last the dream is about to come true for cyclists to safely reach Venice from Mestre without risking their life each time. The latest project was approved yesterday by the Town Council, for a cycle track that exploits the footbath along the four kilometres long Liberty Bridge that joins Venice with the mainland.

The project will incorporate the footpath with a new stretch at the end towards the Tronchetto, of a 700 m long cantilever walkway which will overcome the natural narrowing of the footpath from 1.20 meters to 90 meters.

The project is for a lightweight low impact structure that runs along the bridge as far as the pedestrian walkway at the Tronchetto, lit by leds at night to avoid lighting pollution.

An investment of 3 million euros is required to complete the project, and a part of the money will come from the revenue from the speed cameras installed along the bridge.

The track will be usable in both directions, to and from Venice. “Now that the council has approved the preliminary project, just a few other administrative steps are needed”, Antonio Stifanelli commented. “We want the track to be ready for 2014 when a new tram will also reach Venice”, councillor Ugo Bergamo stated.
